Alexandra is one of South Africa’s oldest townships, established in 1912 and named after the original farmer’s wife — briefly the only place Black South Africans could own freehold land, until that right was abolished in the 1930s. Nelson Mandela rented a backyard room here when he first arrived in Johannesburg in 1941.
A century of history in a few square kilometres
The first 40 families settled Alexandra in 1913; by 1916 around 30,000 people had already moved in, and today the population is estimated at around 700,000 — extraordinary density for the township’s original footprint. The Alexandra Heritage Centre, an architecturally striking museum built across and above a busy street, opened in 2018 after years of delay and includes a touch-activated wall of vinyl records celebrating Alexandra’s musical heritage. Mandela’s Yard preserves the site of his first Johannesburg home, and Pan Africa Mall serves as a genuine commercial and social hub for the community.
