Vanderbijlpark was purpose-built as a company town from 1942, once it became clear ISCOR’s Pretoria steelworks couldn’t expand further — the steelworks themselves started operating in 1947, and the town was formally proclaimed in 1949. Named after Dr H.J. van der Bijl, the scientist Prime Minister Jan Smuts commissioned to advise on South Africa’s industrial development, Vanderbijlpark was designed by ISCOR as a forward-thinking company town — green boulevards, spacious homes, and a deliberately circular layout divided into four residential blocks, a striking departure from the grid design almost every other South African town uses. That planning legacy shows today in unusually wide streets and generous green space for an industrial town.
