Kriel is a Highveld coal-belt town in the Nkangala District of Mpumalanga, roughly 130 km east of Johannesburg. It was built in the 1970s around the Kriel Power Station and the collieries that feed it, and the town’s layout still reflects that origin: compact, planned residential blocks close to the plant, with the township of Thubelihle and the surrounding farms and mining operations spread out around it.
A planned mining town on the eastern Highveld
Most housing in Kriel is single-storey free-standing homes on generous stands, much of it originally utility or company housing, alongside newer private developments. That makes for straightforward roof and wall mounting in the majority of cases. The town sits on open, exposed Highveld with very little tree cover, so line of sight to the satellite is rarely the problem here — weather and airborne dust are.
