Gold, coal and the Main Reef Road
Every East Rand town owes its founding to the same 1886 gold discovery that built Johannesburg, with the exception of Springs, founded on coal — and all were once separate mining towns strung along Main Reef Road, first cut by the wagon wheels of miners following the gold reef itself. Ekurhuleni today accounts for nearly a quarter of Gauteng’s economy, earning it the nickname “Africa’s Workshop” for the sheer concentration of manufacturing and industry packed into the region, alongside OR Tambo International Airport, the continent’s busiest, which anchors Kempton Park’s economy specifically.
