The LNB (Low-Noise Block downconverter) sits on the arm of your dish and does two jobs: it captures the focused satellite signal and shifts its frequency down to something the decoder can use through standard coaxial cable.
DStv uses a ‘Smart LNB’ that supports multiple decoders without splitters. If you’re upgrading from a single-view dish to Extra View, you’ll need a Smart LNB.
LNBs fail from water ingress, lightning surges and age. Signs of failure: gradual signal loss, weather-correlated outages, or sudden total signal loss with no other cause.
Replacement is quick — 15–25 minutes with a re-alignment afterwards. Don’t reuse old weather boots: they crack and let water in.
