History you can still see on the street
Vilakazi Street in Orlando West carries more concentrated history than almost any other street in the country: Nelson Mandela’s former home at number 8115 (now the Mandela House museum) sits a short walk from Archbishop Desmond Tutu’s former residence. Upper Vilakazi has grown into a strip of restaurants and lounge bars that draws visitors well beyond the immediate area. Nearby, the Orlando Towers — two decommissioned cooling towers from a former coal-fired power station, now covered in murals and used for bungee jumping and other extreme sports — have become one of Soweto’s most recognisable landmarks. FNB Stadium (Soccer City), just outside Soweto’s boundary, hosted the 2010 World Cup final and remains a major events venue that affects traffic and access across the area on match days.
